Why Major in Medical Billing?

In today’s economy, everyone is looking for a sure thing. The days of seeking out commission based jobs with limitless potential are over, because most of those markets are so unstable that it is not worth the risk. So where do you turn? Well, why not major in medical billing? What is medical billing? Medical billing is a profession where you are responsible for submitting paperwork to insurance companies regarding treatment of a patient in order to receive payment for medical services rendered. It is a fairly simple process, but does require a good amount of training. There are several reasons to consider studying for a profession in this stable career field.

First, it is incredibly stable. The demand for people trained in medical billing processes is tremendously high. Whether you choose to seek a certificate, associate’s degree or bachelor’s, you will likely be able to find a salaried position immediately after. Even if you end up with an hourly position, the pay is so high that it will be better than most other positions you could seek out. This kind of job security is rare in today’s market, and makes medical billing a very smart educational path to travel down.

Moreover, it is not a difficult education to receive. If you are short on time, and need to find a job quickly, you can simply go for a six month program and receive a certificate. For many online companies, and small medical practices in your area, this amount of training will usually be sufficient. If you are looking for a higher paying position or would like a full time position at a bigger clinic, you can get an associate’s degree, which still only takes about two years. If you are really ambitious, and looking for possible managerial responsibilities, there is no need to consider a master’s program for business. In fact, people who receive a bachelor’s degree with an emphasis in medical billing have a good chance of getting a managerial position right out of the gates. Not a bad deal, when you think about it.

Finally, medical billing degrees give you options. If you want an office position with a good benefits package, you have that option. On the other hand, if you are looking to supplement the income of a current job with some side work, or need to work from home in order to take care of your kids, that can be done as well. There are a wide variety of medical billing firms that will contract out work to people. That means you can go to work in your pajamas every day, if you want. Whether you are looking for a professional deal or something more casual, a degree in medical billing can get you where you want to go.
